Spun chair by Thomas Heatherwick

Designed by Thomas Heatherwick the Spun chair is a spinning chair made of rotational moulded polyethylene. The peripheral edge and tip of the chair has a leather trim to prevent damage to the floor. Each chair is assembled with six spinnings of thick metal, welded together and polished to give a uniform single form. The handmade spun pieces are formed by pressing large sheets of metal against a rotating cast iron form using a large paddle. The sit is very comfortable and functional and one can spin round in a complete circle.

I chose this piece as it is a functional chair and can be sat in, yet its purpose has been changed and made as a fun way of sitting as well as being comfortable when reclined. This piece i feel is most beautiful in the bottom image in a dark black and gold, highlighting the form and spun manufacturing lines.
